Summary

At the start of a recent one-day Meditating Manager™ workshop, I asked sixteen managers (from a variety of backgrounds and industries) to list what they wanted to take away from that session. Balance, balance and balance came back the resounding response. At least seventy percent of the participants specifically used the very word – balance – and the rest alluded to it in some way. But after serious dialogue, it became apparent that no-one could offer a framework or a pathway to attaining balance within their daily lives.

I never pretend to have the definitive answer. Like most, I am still experiencing the puzzling dualities in my own search for balance as I travel this precious path of life. In this chapter I do share some great tips – which I like to think of as cutting-edge, 4000-year-old wisdom. I have also included my own formula for balance. And, as others’ stories are often the most powerful learning tools, I offer some very personal experiences from my own journey.

This chapter invites you to climb aboard with your backpack open and ready to take on new items. It introduces the concepts of yoga and meditation, linking these ancient practices to 21st century business. After you are thoroughly intrigued, there are some practices that can work anywhere anytime.

This is not a chapter for experienced meditators, rather it is an introduction for busy people. It does not recommend that you add yet another activity to your full daily schedule. Rather it offers some techniques that you can easily integrate into your everyday life, anywhere any time.

About the Author

Robyn Taylor

Robyn Taylor has lived in Africa, UK, Italy, Norway and studied in the USA. Her experience ranges from marketing and public relations for casino resorts in Swaziland and Lesotho; HR management of 350 staff in a South African fashion chain; national marketing for an Australian training management system; and management consultancy in Scandinavia.

A significant achievement was realising her goal to secure the IKEA franchise for Brisbane, and then establishing the Swedish furniture store in Queensland. As the Construction Project Manager and Co-Franchisee, Robyn built the first 8000 sqm outlet, then managed and marketed the retail operation.

The ancient science of yoga and meditation has become Robyn’s passion. She pioneered the introduction of a unique blend of ancient Eastern philosophies and modern management practices to the international business sector. Robyn identified that many business colleagues were operating in climates devoid of true purpose and meaning.

She shares these classic teachings so others can enjoy the benefits in their business and personal lives. The recipient of national, state and regional business awards, Robyn maintains that living life to purpose is the key to a balanced business and personal life.
