Summary

Most of us spend one-third of our lives at work and, in many of those workplaces, there is an expectation that we will achieve more with less. Often this expectation is a demand made by bosses out of touch with reality and whose behaviour, although archaic, is ‘still the way we do things around here’.

New ways of leading and managing organisations – essential for success in today’s world – are gradually emerging. However, it is likely to be another generation before these exciting developments are commonplace. As workplaces truly, radically reinvent themselves over the next 10 years, resilience will become an essential personal success factor for managers at all levels. Resilient people believe anything is possible and are undeterred by the challenges of life; instead they are forever in pursuit of possibility.

Resilience is a skill we can learn and, just as importantly, is an attitude we must demonstrate. The five part framework introduced in this chapter, will help you to develop your skills and inform your attitude.
