Summary

We spend so much of our lives at work, why shouldn’t we look for personal relevance? How we feel about our work impacts on our lives, our relationships at home and our health. If we can link our own personal vision with our work, we can create more fulfilled and satisfied lives. But this takes courage and resilience – courage to be different, to choose paths that may not be expected or accepted by others, to make bold decisions and to stay the course despite setbacks, criticism or blocks to achieving the dream – and it takes resilience.

Each of us can find different ways of creating personal relevance in our work, and courage and resilience sit hand in hand as traveling companions on our journey.

About the Author

Clare Goodman

Clare Goodman Clifford is a corporate advisor and executive coach who has worked with CEOs and leadership teams across Australia. Clare’s first career was in strategic marketing in multi-national companies based in the United Kingdom. Clare went through the usual corporate education system gaining a BA(Hon) in Business Studies, a post-graduate diploma in marketing and an MBA in Strategic Marketing.

Clare has redefined her career a number of times. The first was a simple shift from being employed by large organisations as a marketing professional to working with partners to start an advertising agency in London. The change was rewarding, both professionally – as she discovered the differences between working for a large multinational to working for herself – and personally, by jumping outside her comfort zone.

The second change for Clare came after she migrated to Australia in 1996. She took on a number of corporate roles, including a stint as general manager, and then decided to have a career break. In the following 12 months Clare took the opportunity to consider her career path and really question what she was doing and why.

After decompressing from years of corporate slog, Clare realised that her two passions were helping people and building businesses. She knew that if she could create a business that enabled her to do both, then she would be energised, engaged and happy. After exploring possible options, Clare took the step to start her own business as an executive coach and corporate advisor. Today her efforts are focused on supporting senior executives, helping them to grow and develop into effective leaders – and most days she can’t believe she gets paid for doing what she loves!
